Overview

The original QuiLivorno app had several critical issues: unclear navigation, lack of a well-defined user flow, and low user engagement. These problems resulted in general user frustration and lower app usage.

UX/UI Process

In redesigning the QuiLivorno app, I focused on two fundamental aspects: a well-organized content structure and intuitive navigation. To offer you a truly enjoyable news reading experience, I chose to use both horizontal and vertical scrolling. Let's see in detail how I achieved this goal:

Spotlight on daily news: On the app's home screen, you will find a highly visible section with horizontal scrolling dedicated to the day's top news. This section leverages the CMS (Content Management System) of local journalists, allowing them to select the most important articles. This way, you can have a quick overview of the day's top news at a glance and also save articles to refer to them in the future, thus creating a collection of news of your interest.

Explore in depth thanks to content hierarchy: Below the spotlight on daily news, you will find a section with vertical scrolling that presents a broader organization of the content.

News categories: The main news categories (Local News, Economy, Sports) are displayed clearly and easily accessible. You can tap on a category to explore the related articles.

Tab-based layout: News articles are presented in elegant tabs, with clear titles, captivating images, and concise summaries. This allows you to quickly browse the news and identify the ones that interest you the most.

User-centric information architecture: User research played a key role in defining the information architecture. Understanding how the residents of Livorno consume news allowed us to prioritize categories and subcategories, aligning them with your expectations.

Refreshed user interface and brand identity: balancing accessibility and local appeal

In addition to the improved information structure, the app has received a complete refresh of the user interface and a revitalization of the brand identity:

Accessibility remains fundamental: Ensuring a comfortable reading experience for all users has been a top priority. High contrast themes, larger fonts, and a clear visual hierarchy have been implemented. We have also followed the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) for color selection, promoting an inclusive experience.

Conclusion

Thanks to a user-centric content hierarchy, an intuitive navigation with elements for gathering information, and an accessible yet engaging user interface, the new QuiLivorno app enables Livorno residents to efficiently find local news of interest to them, while journalists can easily highlight the top headlines.
